HanesBrands will resume its continuing education program for employees in the Caribbean and Central America by pivoting to remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a press release Thursday.

Currently, 700 employees across El Salvador, Honduras and the Dominican Republic are studying for high school degrees and using public education platforms in their respective countries.

The undergarment and basics apparel maker, which has more than 25,000 employees in Central America and the Caribbean islands, started the educational program in 2009. Since then, more than 2,700 Hanes employees have earned high school degrees, and more than 200 have earned college degrees.

“In spite of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to invest in our employees and support their desires to enhance their personal and professional development opportunities,” HanesBrands’ vice president of human resources, Maria Elena Sikaffy.

To address these challenges that employee students face, HanesBrands has added coronavirus-related courses, including “Mental Health and Emotional Crisis,” “Creative Economy Management During Crisis” and “Coaching and Leadership During COVID-19 Times” to its online learning catalog.

In addition to relevant new courses, HanesBrands has set up an online support system of email, video calls, and chat to accommodate and aid online learners.

HanesBrands has also added an international MBA program to its continuing education program for manager-level employees in partnership with Euncet Business School, an institute linked to the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain.

HanesBrands (HBI) shares were last trading down 0.51 percent, or 8 cents, at $15.72 on Friday.
