Greensboro Tax Return Preparer Sentenced to Prison for Tax and Bankruptcy Fraud

A Greensboro resident was sentenced to 37 months for obstructing the Internal Revenue Service, filing fraudulent tax returns and bankruptcy fraud, according to a press release by the Department of Justice.

Hassie Demond Nowlin, also known as Demond Nowlin or Brilliant Knowlin, 44, filed several fraudulent tax return with the IRS that included fake incomes and withholding taxes and sought more than $750,000 in fraudulent refunds.

Between 2011 and 2017, Nowlin earned hundreds of thousands of dollars operating a tax preparation business.

He filed hundreds of tax returns for clients that claimed fake business and education expenses, sought refunds to which the clients were not entitled to and did not identify him as the paid preparer.

The fees earned from this were deposited into nominee bank accounts controlled by Nowlin.

Nowlin also admitted to attempting to cheat his creditors by filing fraudulent personal bankruptcy petitions.

He also submitted false financial statements, on which he did not disclose his income and assets.

Along with his prison sentence, Nowlin has been ordered to serve three years supervised release and pay $188,001.89 to the IRS in restitution.
