ConMet to Lay Off 84 Workers in Bryson City

11/3/17

Consolidated Metco Inc. plans to close its manufacturing facility in Bryson City, North Carolina, that will result in the permanent lay off of 84 employees, according to a notice filed with the state Commerce Department.

ConMet filed a WARN Act to announce it is laying off the employees in order to “simplify its North American manufacturing footprint.” The layoffs will begin around Jan. 5, 2018, and will continue through Jan. 19, 2018.

According to the notice, the Vancouver, Washington-based company offered all hourly and many salaried employees the opportunity to transfer to a different North Carolina location.

Some have accepted and others are still considering the offers, but ConMet still expects there to be about 84 layoffs.

ConMet is a global manufacturer of components for the commercial vehicle industry. The Bryson City operation is in western North Carolina.

This notice was filed pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which must be filed 60 days in advance of a plant closing that affects more than 50 employees in a 30-day period or a mass layoff of at least 500 employees or between 50-499 employees if they make up at least one-third of the employer’s workforce.
