North Carolina ranks #9 out of all 50 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and USVI for growth in number of middle market firms from 2011-2016.

North Carolina has an estimated 4,541 middle market companies ($10 million-$1 billion in annual revenues), which make .87% of all firms in the state according to the latest Middle Market Power Index from American Express and Dun & Bradstreet.

The newest report in the series finds that the middle market is an increasingly important sector. While middle market firms make up less than 1% of all U.S. businesses, they contribute about one in four dollars (27%) and employ a little more than a quarter of U.S. workers (27%) in the private sector. Overall, middle market firms were also responsible for more than half (51.7%) of the 51.8 million new jobs that have been created in the U.S. since 2011.
