Discount retailer Dollar Express will close all locations following Dollar General’s acquisition of all 323 of its stores.

Approximately 138 employees in Charlotte will be laid off effective June 30, according to a filing notice with the state. None of the affected employees are represented by a union.

Dollar Express has two Charlotte stores located on East Sugar Creek Road and South Boulevard. The company’s headquarters is located on East Independence Boulevard. Countrywide, the company would lay off 2,800 employees.

Dollar Express formed as a result of Dollar Tree’s acquisition of Family Dollar in 2014. The Federal Trade Commission required Dollar Tree to sell off 330 stores, creating a new chain, to avoid one company from dominating the discount store market.

Following the acquisition, Dollar General’s stock closed at $69.33, up 0.04, or 0.06 percent.

The notice was filed pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which must be filed 60 days in advance of a plant closing that affects more than 50 employees in a 30-day period or a mass layoff of at least 500 employees or between 50 to 499 employees if they make up at least one-third of the employer’s workforce.

All North Carolina filings under the WARN Act can be found here.
