SouthCorr LCC, an Asheboro-based packaging company, will expand its Asheboro operations.

The company announced it will add 22 jobs to the plant, investing $6.7 million in the expansion. The state is supplementing SouthCorr’s investment with a $50,000 One North Carolina Fund grant.

“Demand for paper packaging is steadily growing as consumers look for products like ours that are more environmentally friendly.” said Jeff McNeill, operations manager for SouthCorr. “These investments will help the company grow its manufacturing workforce and keep good paying jobs here in the U.S.”

IBISWorld, an international industry research firm, states that paper packaging companies are experiencing growth and will continue to do so.

“Although the industry has historically faced strong external competition from substitute materials, particularly plastic,” said the report, “increased environmental awareness over the past five years has shifted consumer preferences toward paper-based packaging.”

New employees’ salaries at SouthCorr will average $36,200 per year, compared to Randolph County’s current average salary of $33,974 per year, the release reported.

SouthCorr is a joint venture owned by Interstate Resources, which owns 18 companies in nine states across the East Coast, according to its website. The manufacturing group produces corrugated sheets, paper, timber and lumber and other packing and storage materials.

SouthCorr has been in operation since 1995 and was acquired by Interstate Resources in 2004.

Other partners in the expansion project include the North Carolina General Assembly, the City of Asheboro and the Randolph County Economic Development Corp.
