Total annual compensation for the chief executive officer of EnPro Industries Inc. fell 21.5 percent last year, according to the company’s proxy statement filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Stephen Macadam received $3.3 million in total compensation in 2016, falling from $4.2 million in 2015.

The figure included a base salary of $850,000, which was unchanged from 2015, as well as a $720,000 reward from EnPro’s non-equity incentive plan, down nearly 60 percent from his $1.7 million award in 2015.

EnPro, a diesel engine maker and industrial manufacturer, said a weaker-than-expected industrial environment resulted in negative year-over-year sales in nearly all of the markets the Charlotte company serves. In early February, EnPro reported a 65.6 percent drop in its fourth-quarter profit for 2016.

As a result, Macadams received a payout of only 81 percent of his annual target level.

Meanwhile, the total compensation for the company’s former chief operating officer jumped by 82 percent. Kenneth Walker received $2.3 million from EnPro in 2016, up from $1.3 million in 2015.

The figure included about $1.1 million in compensation associated with Walker’s resignation from EnPro, which the company announced in a regulatory filing on Nov. 22. EnPro eliminated the position of chief operating officer following Walker’s departure.

Total compensation for Chief Financial Officer J. Milton Childress remained nearly steady at $1.2 million, while Marvin Riley, division president of EnPro subsidiary Fairbanks-Morse, saw his total compensation fall 38.6 percent to $694,000 in 2016.

Founded in 2001, EnPro, which reported sales of $705.6 million for the year, employs nearly 4,500 people worldwide and manufactures products through its three operating segments: sealing products, engineered products and power systems.

EnPro will hold its annual shareholder meeting at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island in South Carolina on Wednesday, April 26.
