Causes for Divorce

Divorce can feel like you’re giving up on your marriage and your family. You may be left wondering if you can make it without your spouse. You may worry about your children and wonder if staying together is best for them. Your self-esteem may also take a hit. However, there are times when divorce may be the best option for your family. Here are a few things to consider:

Violence

Divorce may become necessary when physical or emotional violence occurs within the family. This violence may be between parents or worse, against a child. When violence occurs, the family’s household becomes a toxic and unsafe environment.

Substance Abuse

When a spouse is addicted to drugs and/or alcohol and refuses to get help, divorce may be the right choice. Left unchecked, substance abuse can lead to domestic abuse and financial ruin.

Infidelity

Adultery strikes at the very core of trust. Once trust is lost, it is difficult if not impossible to re-establish. If counseling efforts have been exhausted, it may be time to consider a divorce.

Financial Problems

Having too much debt, unchecked spending, and/or differing financial priorities can be detrimental to your marriage. Disagreements about money often lead to disagreements about other important things.

Thinking about divorce is unpleasant. However, there are times when it is healthier to get out than to stay in the marriage. If domestic violence, addiction, infidelity, financial arguments, or other issues have pushed you to the point of considering divorce, please contact Linda Sorg Ostovitz at lostovitz@offitkurman.com or telephone (301) 575-0381 to discuss your options.
