Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina announced Monday that Chief Executive Officer Brad Wilson will retire later this year.

A replacement for Wilson has not been chosen. Board Chairman Frank Holding Jr. said the board is looking at both external and internal candidates.

Wilson began working at Blue Cross in 1996 and has served as president and CEO since 2010.

During his leadership, Wilson oversaw the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He worked with politicians to ensure quality health for North Carolinians and positioned the company to become the only company to offer ACA in all 100 counties of North Carolina.

Wilson transitioned the company to value based care, which bundled costs, focused costs on the quality of care rather than quantity, and placed quality incentives in hospital contracts across North Carolina.

“The Board of Trustees greatly appreciates Brad’s 20- year career of service to Blue Cross and his leadership as president and CEO during this period of transformation in health care and health insurance,” said Holding. “As a reflection of his leadership, Blue Cross is well positioned to continue to serve North Carolina and represent our state’s interests in the rapidly-evolving heath care industry.”

Wilson’s retirement coincides with the new health care policies being discussed under President Donald Trump.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is privately owned and an independent licensee in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
