NK Patent Law continues to participate in important innovation events across North Carolina, sharing best practices on protecting and exploiting intellectual property assets as a competitive advantage.
The firm recently presented at the 2017 Small Business Summit hosted by Guilford Technical Community College’s (GTCC) Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship on January 6, following a December presentation on the use of patent analytics to members of the Science, Ag Biotech, and Business Technology groups from the NC Biotech Center in Research Triangle Park.
“Patentability searches and competitive landscapes can be an important part of developing a patent application filing strategy, and can further help instruct a business on where they can most effectively focus their R&D,” said Lyle Gravatt, patent attorney and NC Biotech Center presenter.
Gravatt explained that prior art searching and competitive intelligence help businesses see what industry participants are doing, which market spaces are crowded with similar patents, and which niches present opportunities for development.
Patent attorney Joseph Shin gave the GTCC presentation in Greensboro as an introduction to intellectual property law for startups, covering topics such as trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, trade dress and patents. Shin, who works out of NK Patent Law’s new Winston-Salem office, led two sessions for groups of between 15-20 entrepreneurs.
“Intellectual property isn’t something people focus on when starting a business, they’re so concerned with other nitty gritty aspects,” Shin explained, adding, “But IP is not only something that can be an important part of growing a business, it’s something every business owner should take seriously so it doesn’t end up becoming a problem.”
