North Carolina has claimed two Blue Ribbon Small Business Awards from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Calibrate Inc., based in Carrboro, and Meridian Zero Degrees LLC, of Aberdeen, were among the 75 U.S. businesses that received the Blue Ribbon awards. The U.S. Chamber awards small businesses that demonstrate "excellent business practices" in several areas, including business strategy, employee development, community involvement and customer service.
Calibrate offers on-site pipette calibration and repair services. A pipette is a narrow tube for suctioning in fluid to be used for measurement and dispensing.
Calibrate is led by CEO Mike Hartke, who founded the still-independent company in 1983 when he discovered that laboratories were dissatisfied with their only option for calibrating and repairing their pipettes: sending the equipment back to the manufacturer. Calibrate offers a full warranty for service and parts.
Meridian Zero Degrees manufactures kiosks and self-service devices, offering complete metal fabrication in-house. Founded in 1999, the privately held company specializes in design, fabrication, assembly and integration of self-service kiosks ranging from small form factor units to customized kiosks for specific locations or events.
Meridan is led by CEO Nick Van Wyk. The company's customers include Cingular, Red Bull, Mazda, Motorola and Food Lion.
"These businesses have shown tremendous dedication to restoring jobs and prosperity despite a challenging economy," , senior director of marketing communications at the U.S. Chamber, said of the Blue Ribbon winners in a news release. "Their unfailing commitment to their employees, customers and communities is truly commendable."
Out of the 75 businesses, seven will have the opportunity to win the $10,000 Dream Big Small Business of the Year Award, which honors the nation's job creators and recognizes their contributions as drivers of economic growth.
All award winners will be recognized at America's Small Business Summit, May 23-25 in Washington, D.C.
