CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) employees may have shifted loyalties to Republican Mitt Romney, after backing President Barack Obama four years ago, according to an analysis of Wall Street donations to 2012 presidential candidates.
Workers at the Charlotte-headquartered bank have so far given the Massachusetts Republican $112,500, compared with less than half - $46,699 - to Obama, Business Insider said, citing an analysis of campaign fundraising reports through the third quarter by Center for Responsive Politics, a political research group based in Washington.
In 2008, BofA employees overwhelmingly backed Obama, giving $394,242 to the Democrat's campaign, and a mere $66,500 to Romney's failed primary bid.
Among other 2012 candidates, BoFA employees gave $12,750 to Minnesota Republican Tim Pawlenty and $4,250 to Utah Republican Jon Huntsman.
"...latest FEC filings show the president may be in big trouble when it comes to tapping into the deep pockets of the finance industry," Business Insider concluded after analyzing donations from all Wall Street institutions. The analysis shows that Romney has collected more than $7.5 million in donations from employees in the financial sector, almost double Obama's $3.9 million total, the website added.
Overall, Obama has received more than $42 million for his re-election campaign.
